Book Review: The Emperor's Blades

The Emperor’s Blades: Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne Book One by Brian Staveley
The Annurian Empire is at a dire pass, the Emperor has been murdered and his three children are scattered. The heir Kaden is studying at a remote monastery where he is abused aka ‘trained’ by wannabe Jedi. Adare hunts her father’s murderer in the capital. But the conspiracy runs deeper than she imagined. Valyn is training to join the Empire’s Special Forces and it is the training from hell causing him to succumb to the darkness within. This is a good medieval fantasy set in a sprawling empire full of treachery, intrigue and long hidden powers. I will read Book Two, which I hope has less endless uses of the phrase “Kent-kissing”

Best Lines:
“He had the good sense to kill himself, at least.”

“They send people,”

“Atlatun wanted to rule, but his father looked a little too healthy for his taste, so he stabbed him in the eye over the dinner table.”
