Movie Review: The Worst Witch (1986)

Long before ‘Harry Potter’ there were the wonderful ‘The Worst Witch’ books by Jill Murphy. They focused on Mildred Hubble the worst student at Miss Cackle’s school for witches. This made for TV movie bears no resemblance to the books and is utterly terrible in every way. Mildred (Fairuza Balk of ‘Return to Oz’ and ‘The Craft’) is hopeless and useless and gets an equally hopeless familiar. Musical numbers take place to pad out the running time.

Miss Cackle’s evil twin sister shows up to steal her sister’s identity. Hardass teacher Miss Hardbroom (Diana Rigg) sneers and has a low tolerance for Mildred. Awful school bully Ethel Hallow ruins the choreographed broomstick flying display that the students put on in front of the Grand Wizard (Tim Curry) and Mildred is the scapegoat. Thankfully Mildred uncovers the fake Miss Cackle and the Grand Wizard (and his lame jacket, bat bowtie and cape the size of a hang glider) takes her flying. This was full of hammy overacting, bad songs, cheap ugly costumes, bad SFX and yet somehow inspired three awful TV series.

Best Line:
“Pleasant nightmares.”
