Book Reviews: Spell Games +Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand

Spell Games by T.A. Pratt

The 4th in the Marla Mason urban fantasy series after 'Blood Engines', 'Poison Sleep' and 'Dead Reign'.

Marla's con artist brother Jason pays a visit and thus begins a series of disastrous events for Marla. Jason and Marla's sidekick Rondeau plot to con a rich man desperate to be involved in magic. Meanwhile a mushroom worshipping sorcerer pays a visit to Felport, his command of vegetal magic is something to fear. Meanwhile Marla's apprentice Bradley keeps getting hit with a dark vision he cannot decipher.

It all comes together in an explosion of betray and tragedy. This was another excellent entry in the Marla Mason series. It's exciting, compulsively readable and absorbing. I look forward to book 5.

Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand by Carrie Vaughn

The 5th novel about Kitty a werewolf/talk radio host. This latest entry in the delightful urban fantasy series sees Kitty and fellow werewolf Ben plan to elope to Las Vegas. However it all goes wrong, the local vampire is a loser, there is another clan of shapeshifters in town and their hotel is playing host to a posse of bounty hunters who come across a rejects from the 'Anita Blake' series.

Kitty has to save the day, or sot of save the day as the ending leaves things mostly unresolved for the next book in the series 'Kitty Raises Hell'. This was a fairly good read with some further worldbuilding done and a new bevy of enemies and allies show up.
