Movie Review: In The Mouth Of Madness (1994)

This okay Lovecraft style horror stars Sam Neil (of ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘The Hunt For Red October’), Jurgen Prochnow (of ‘Das Boot’), David Warner (of ‘Waxwork’), John Glover (of ‘Smallville’) and Charlton Heston. Smug insurance investigator John Trent (Neill) ends up in a padded cell while various types (Warner and Glover) wonder what is up with him.

Trent tells of how he was hired by a publishing CEO (Heston) to look into the disappearance of bestselling author Sutter Caine (Prochnow). Trent does despite weird things happening to him. He sees things and a lunatic with an axe creeps up on whilst he is in a diner. Trent and Sutter Caine's book editor Linda head to a small New England town, which is obviously Lovecraft country. The town and everyone in it is creepy including the huge Byzantine church that is there for no clear reason.

Trent refuses to see all the evidence that vile monsters are contaminating time and Sutter Caine is their mouthpiece. The image was murky, Linda was a non-person, almost everyone and everything is the product of Sutter Caine’s mind, inhumans will rule, Sutter Caine whispers ominously, the human race seems doomed to extinction and Trent goes mad in the dark. This was okay.

Best Lines:
“The crosses were a nice touch. They’d almost have to keep you in here once they’d seen these wouldn’t they?”

“Where does fiction become religion? And are his fans dangerous?”

“That lunatic with the axe? That was Caine’s agent?”
“Hard to believe isn’t it?”
“Well you’d think a guy who outsells Stephen King could find better representation.”

“They all seem to have to same plot you know: slimy things in the dark, people go mad, turn into monsters.”

“They were telling me what to write.”

“Do you like my ending?”

“Always looking for the con.”

“Your books suck!”

“I think therefore you are...see what I have in store for you.”

“I never read Caine’s work. I don’t have the stomach for it.”

“All the major cities on the East Coast are silent.”

“Do not trust any friends or family members.”
