The Caretaker of Lorne Field by Dave Zeltserman
Jack Durkin is the latest in his line to have weeded Lorne Field. It is a sacred trust long borne by his family to destroy the monsters that grow there. But his shrew wife and sneering elder son refuse to believe and mock him. Plus the new generation of townsfolk do not want to believe and mock him.
The proud old before his time Jack is worn down by the ungrateful bastards who keep trying to convince him he is psychotic whilst he knows if he stops weeding for just one day the world is doomed. This was good, a nice chilling tale.
Best Lines:
“Doesn’t surprise me. They always seemed a bit inbred over there.”
“They don’t grow there. That’s just where they choose to come out of the ground.”
