Zone One by Colson Whitehead

Humanity has been devastated by a plague of living dead. Mark Spitz is a member of a task force assigned to reclaim Manhattan. Over three days he does his job, remembers the past and awaits the inevitable over running of their defences. This is a good post-apocalyptic novel.
