Carl (Sam Neill) is a loser who has a perpetually disappointed mother. To get away from her he gets a job as a cook in the filthy kitchen of a nightclub run by bogans. Carl hates the job but falls for a barmaid named Sophie.
The sullen, awkward Carl is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. This leads to him accidentally killing a co-worker with a fork, being blamed when the club is firebombed and getting into a fight with his vile boss. Somehow he manages to blunder into a happy ever after by accident. This is mediocre with some funny moments.
“I know you think it’s Bohemian, all this filth.”
“You really are like a chook in a thunderstorm sometimes.”
In Asgard, the bad parenting of Odin (a bored looking Anthony Hopkins) leads to him banishing his bratty son Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to Earth while being oblivious to his other son Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) raging jealously and bubbling insanity.
Thor is a jackass and wants his mighty hammer back while Earth woman Jane (Natalie Portman) finds herself falling for the “crazy homeless person”. Meanwhile back on Asgard, Loki has issues with the Frost Giants and declares himself king.
Jane and her pals Darcy and Erik figure out Thor is an alien. Thor deals with the smug annoying worm Coulson. Hawkeye has a cameo. Thor realises self-actualisation is called for in his life and becomes a better person.
Loki lies and has issues due to paternity revelations. There is sibling rivalry, fights and more terrible terrible parenting from Odin. This was very good. The Thor/Loki relationship is the best part of it. Bring on ‘Thor 2’.
“The Casket wasn’t the only thing you took from Jotunheim that day.”
“I am no more than another stolen relic, locked up here until you might have use of me.”
“This drink I like it…another!”
“Are you sending in more guys for him to beat up?”
“I’m talking about science not magic.”
“If there is an Einstein-Rosen Bridge, then there’s something on the other side. And advanced beings could have crossed it.”
“The burden of the throne has fallen to me now.”
“To protect the realm from his idiotic rule for a while longer.”
“I would have words with my brother.”
“I will be true heir to the throne.”
“Why have you done this?”
“To prove to father that I am the worthy son.”
“I’m not your brother, I never was.”
