The latest ‘Southern Vampire’ novel starts out promisingly enough but soon turns pedantic. Sookie has yet another arch enemy. Sookie has a fairy artefact. Bill loves his Sookie. Eric and Sookie have sex. Sookie gets into bar fights. This is all so boring.
I have been reading this series since book 1 ‘Dead Until Dark’ (subtitled ‘A Southern Vampire Mystery’) came out in 2001 and I think it is time to call it a day on Sookie and her baby talk.

Doubletake by Rob Thurman
The 7th ‘Cal Leandros’ novel. This series is trundling on with diminishing returns. Thurman’s other works the ‘Trickster’ and ‘Korsak Brothers’ novels are utter utter crap so it is not a new thing.
Cal and Niko have double trouble. Niko’s father shows up and things get a bit ‘Dr Phil’. Niko’s paternity was addressed in an earlier book and the two accounts don’t tally. Meanwhile Cal learns he isn’t as unique and super-special as he thought he was. He has a rival out there who is making terrible plans. This is good but Cal’s voice isn’t cute and tough but rather rude and annoying.
