Lost Season 3 Eps 11&20 Rewatched

Enter 77

Sayid, Locke, Kate and Danielle trek across the island looking for Jack who is a prisoner of the Others. Or so they think. Anyway back at the beach the annoying, grasping Sawyer rants about ‘his’ stuff and has an uninteresting subplot with Hurley.

Sayid chances upon the Flame Station and meets Mikhail. Danielle wanders off and Locke, Sayid and Kate are Mikhail’s guests. Mikhail claims to be the last surviving member of the Dharma Initiative.

Also Sayid has flashbacks to an encounter he had in Paris and finds a map to the Barracks. Miss Klugh shows up and she and Mikhail demonstrate that they are true believers. This was very good

Why is the compass working when back in season 1 they established that they didn’t work on the island? Why did Mikhail pretend to be Dharma? Why did Locke wander off to play computer chess? What happened to Mikhail’s animals after Locke blew up the Flame? Why didn’t Mikhail and Miss Klugh speak Latin? Why did Locke enter 77?

Best Lines:
“I am sensing a lack of confidence.”
“We’ve been walking for two days following a compass bearing provided by the carvings on a stick.”
“You really think we’re just going to chance upon where the Others are?”

“I have survived on the island precisely by avoiding these types of encounters.”

“What happened to the Dharma Initiative?”
“They’re all dead of course. They foolishly initiated a war against the Hostiles.”

“Who are they, these Hostiles?”
“I do not know. But they were here for a long time before we were, a very long time.”

The Man Behind The Curtain

Locke thinks he is important but he wasn’t important at all in the long run. Ben and Locke go to visit Jacob. Ben reveals he and his horrible drunk father were members of the Dharma Initiative. Richard lurks in the background; people treat him like he’s Tom Hagen. But he’s not.

Ben claims Richard doesn’t know where Jacob is or talk to him, which in season 6 was proven to be a big old lie. After all in that terrible Richard flashback ep didn’t Jacob slap Richard around and recruit him as the original Other? And as for the non-event that was Jacob. He forced people to live in his world. That it could be a nightmare was of no concern to Jacob. One man’s utopia...

Flashbacks show Ben grew up in Dharma but he hated it and his horrible abusive dad. The Dharma people were fighting the Hostiles. The Dharma people didn’t seem to care that it wasn’t their island. The Dharma school even had a drill for Hostile attacks.

There is an uninteresting subplot involving Juliet and a dictaphone. The real interesting stuff is when a young Ben runs away from Dharma only to encounter the ageless Richard in the jungle. This encounter leads in time to the purge. Ben indicates he wasn’t the only Dharma member to switch sides. Ben does not like Locke and demonstrates this. This was very good.

Here Horace Goodspeed hangs out with Olivia. But in season 5 Horace was married to another woman and there was no sign or word of Olivia. So was she his sister or his first wife? Where did she go? What happened to Ben’s childhood friend Annie? Why did Locke beat up Mikhail? Why did Tom and Richard not intervene?

Why didn’t the Dharma group ever wonder who the Hostiles were? Why did young Ben see visions of his mother? Was it Smokey all along? Why was Richard in his raggedy disguise? What did Ben and Locke encounter at the cabin? Was it Smokey again? Why did Dharma make Ben a workman?

In season 5 after Sayid shot young Ben did he end up in the pool that was shown in season 6? Why didn’t Roger get out of the van when Ben was poisoning him? If Richard can’t die, why did he need a gas mask during the purge? Why are the Hostiles in their raggedy disguises during the purge? Who ordered the purge? Was it Widmore? Why was the mass grave never filled in?

Best Lines:
“You do remember birthdays, don’t you Richard?”

“Don’t worry, it’s just the Hostiles.”

“We’re having some skirmishes with the natives.”
“What do you mean natives?”
“Well, we’re not exactly sure who they are.”

“Are you one of them?”
“One of who?”
“A Hostile.”

“They couldn’t even co-exist with the island’s original inhabitants. When it became clear that one side had to go, one side had to be purged. I did what I had to do. I was one of the people that was smart enough to make sure I didn’t end up in that ditch."
