Book Review: Six Feet Deep Dish 🍕🍕

Six Feet Deep Dish by Mindy Quigley

Delilah O'Leary is the pizza chef who wants to open a gourment deep dish pizzeria in Wisonsin. She's using her rich boyfriend's money to fund it, which goes bad when she and said rich man have a fight on opening night. Her boyfriend, Sam, is a crunchy, jobless woo woo obsessed moron with a man bun. There is drama, a fat cat, murder and inbetween shoving massive helpings of food into her gaping maw, Delilah becomes a mystery solver.

A cop who is descended from Capone lurks. Nobody ever points that in the opinion of many deep dish pizza isn't pizza, it's cake. Delilah tells the reader how she is queen sized and curvy and too fat for her size 16 mumu. She probably looks like Dusty from 'Paradise PD' and at one point is literally too fat to run away from a threatening baddie.

This is the 1st in a series. This cosy mystery has an arresting cover and is an entertaining read. Is it plausible? No. Delilah seems incapable of running a business. Covid, tips and the global downturn are not mentioned. Hygiene is seemingly unknown. There are no tradition and values or wit and flair. Who is her business aimed at? The local old biddies?

Still this is somewhat brilliantly wrought and it keeps your attention. Sam is burdensome and lacks complex moments. Delilah has a seemingly endless fight with him. Sam seems unable to maintain social function and throws terrible words around causally. Delilah develops an interest in the benevolence of the Capone descendant.

There is upheaval at the pizza place as Delilah seems sloppy and incompetent at business. She does not see through the facade of a reckless and incompetent baddie. Serious accusations and incongruous events cause intense frustration and escalate problems. A snowflake learns of consequences that follow your actions and is an evil bastard making bad decisions and causing a family crisis.

Delilah has an aversion to not having Sam's money which she finds emotionally upsetting. Delilah is not quirky or someone to be amused by. She ridiculed Sam and has long-lasting misconceptions about him and their intrinsically damaging relationship. What does she see in the multi millionaire techbro Sam? She has absolute shock and agitation and dread when there is a murder. Crime solving is her destiny or something.

Delilah's cooking skill is imperceptible. In true cosy mystery fashion, the killer is collared when they do a big speech laying out means, motive and opportunity. All they lack is a flip chart. This was good. There are recipes included which are not gluten free. Some stuff is unknown. What's kosher salt or corn oil or a navel orange? I'll read book 2.
