Book Reviews: The Best Horror Of The Year Volume Twelve, part 2

The Best Horror Of The Year Volume Twelve edited by Ellen Datlow, part 2

A Song for Wounded Mouths

3 band members filming a video in an abandoned house discover something unsettling left behind. This was okay and dark and hinted at abject pervesity and grim deeds and harbingers of terror lurking in unexpected places.

Best Lines:

“To ask him not to leave me int the way he was always leaving.”

“Didn't understand the people we would become.”

“Failed local rock band.”

“A place to run from.”

“A gutted abomination.”

“Back up emotional support.”

Birds Of Passage

A boy and his father take a camping trip. Tricky emotional situations ensue. This was okay but I've no idea what happened.

Best Lines:

“This was man talk.”

“Stoic deadness.”

“Whatever unknown horror lay in the space beyond my father's protection.”

The Puppet Motel

By Gemma Files. A condo is toxic, this is more than sick building syndrome. Much more. This was very good.

Best Lines:

“Cosily archaic furniture.”

“Guests routinely complained about it on Yelp.”

“Chronic over-promiser.”

“Tended to overreact to anything that felt like nagging.”

“The longer I was in that place, the more I wanted – with increasing desperation – to bne anywhere but.”

“Just exactly what made it so...utterly unliveable.”

“Thought that paying to squat semi-illegally in someone else's apartment entitled them to treat me like their maid.”

“Predate human habitation altogether,”

“A rescue that never comes.”

The Senior Girls Bayonet Drill Team

Teen girls get ready to take part in a blood sport. This is set in the future with hints of where they are and what the game is. There is no why. This was good.

Best Lines:

“Honored with a parade and flowers and one of the boys from the bus repair pool,”

“What we wanted to grow up and become.”

“When they left the field, it was always wet with the blood of the other team.”

“One of you gets killed, you'll bleed in the parking lot, not on my floor.”

Who saw 'Perfect Parents'?

My ex has no agonised conscience. My ex had endless duplicity. My ex betrayed me, terribly. My ex = dismissive and contemptuous. I feel deeply frustrated and angry. My ex = appalling and reprehensible. My ex = unsatisfactory and he repeatedly showed bad judgment. He does not appreciate the seriousness of the matter. My ex needs to apologise and make amends. My ex did very significant and irreparable damage. I thought he had the utmost seriousness. He has added very substantially to the damage caused. It would devalue any possible apology. My ex had inherent unreliability. My ex didn't know compassion.

Movie Reviews: The Day Of The Lord + Silence + Ghosts Of War + Sauvage 👎👎👎👎

The Day Of The Lord (2020)

Is a priest an exorcist or a loon? This Mexican horror is fairly unimportant. There is no truth, decency, respect or integrity. There is pure desolation and a surefit of grief. There is booze and pain and defeat. There is frustrated promise and there is emoting down phone lines and maniacal crying. This was not new or engaging. His life has not gone the way he planned. There is no rationality or good decision making or calm. This was macho nonsenset and a damned occupation. The priest ties up and abuses a teen girl. This was crud with a 'twist'.

Best Lines:

“The accursed priest.”

“Knowing your shady reputation?”

“In hell, where you sent him.”

~
Silence (2016)

Adam Driver features in this Martin Scorese film. Ill fated Jesuits go to 17th century Japan. It is 1640. Liam Neeson looms. Bad things happen. Time passes. Andrew Garfield has very shampoo commerical hair despite all the horrors he endures. There are slippery accents and doomed Jesuits. A bad guy does bad things. We see cats. A Judas lurks. Driver goes full method and this was grim. There is a lot of death and grimness. 'Shogun' this isn't. Some Jesuits are disgraced. This was long and dull.

Best Lines:

“Some remained on the mountain for 33 days.”

“Hidden christains.”

“It took years to reach us.”

“Surrended the faith.”

“Now things are even worse.”

“The whole of Catholic Europe.”

“Calls you to a great trial.”

“The outlawed faith.”

“Brought disaster.”

“So tempted to despair.”

“Praying to nothing.”

“Judas got only 30.”

“Verify their use.”

“The price for your glory is their suffering.”

~
Ghosts Of War (2020)

This is World War II horror with Brenton Thwaites of 'Titans'. It is France 1944 and GIs wander around the woods. There is no intelligence or rationalisation. People are smug and overweening. This was a waste of time that stretched credulity. This was meaningless and glaringly opportunistic. There is self righteousness. People have the wrong attiude and people suffer the consequences.

The gang find a chateau and there is bad acting and this was deeply deeply wrong. This was perpetually affronting. There is unpleasantess and slack jawed bafflement. There was irrelevance and bullish, self deluded types. There is no personal certainty. This was not terrifying. There is no relief of victory. There is gloating and sneering. There is no decency or compassion. This deserves to be relentlessly derided. There is a fanaticism of certainty.

There are angry responses and no cumulative effect. This was made with serious misjudgments. There are personal grievances and implications and this was a would be atmospheric backdrop. This was an embarrassment. This was atrocious. This was not unique. There is Hollywood darkness. There is no personal responsbility or compassion.

There is deep dismay and credibility is undermined. This was not vastly impressive. There are no horrific manifestations. There is an inevitable crisis and black magic. This was overwhelmingly negative, weak and unsuccessful. This was not a tense situation. Nazis lurk. There is petulance and self pity and exposition and low standards.

There is no moral purpose and this was appalling. This was seriously devalued. There is no positive action. There are bad tempraments and judgment. There is serious and irreparable damage. Leave the house you fools! The ending 'twist' is stupid. This was unreliable and weak and indifferent and vindictive and inhumane. There is no mercy just patent insincerity and the characters are complete idiots.

Best Lines:

“A forever ago.”

“Clean sheet and toilet paper.”

“Regular Marconi.”

“Ginger from the pig farm.”

~
Sauvage (2018)

In this French film, Leo sells his body on the streets for cash. He's sick and reckless and endures trouble on the job and off the job. He's homeless and on drugs. He drinks water off the street. This was depressing and overtly repellent.

Drakkon New Dawn Issue 3 Reviewed

The coinless universe version of Jason tantrums that his deliberetly brutal act of selfishness isn't applauded. He has dangerous irrationality. Jason rants, has violent swagger and demands to bask in adulation. He faces public antipathy and is a petulant, laughably deluded grim narcissist who does constant airing of personal grievances.

He has contemptuous dismissal and thinks he should be listened to. Jason has general awfulness and whines about broken greatness. They ignore the more ominious danger coming. Jason actively harmed people. Baddies from 'Power Rangers In Space' show up. There is a huge sense of despair and tragedy. Drakkon sent something inexorable and inevitable in motion.

There is no tonal subtlety. Jason dares others to challenge his conduct. People are imperilled. Drakkon has done harm irreparable. Jason was a pretty dire leader. There is edgy uncertainty. There are malign and well intentioned forces. Kim has a cunning plan and this was okay if shamelessly contrived. The coinless get a new name. There are no coins, no zords and no powers. Jason wanders off and Andros shows up. There is incoherent action and a baddie defeated via punching.

Best Lines:

“I just took back what was rightfully ours.”

“The things he drove us to do.”

“Zredd--”

“You are more than your trauma.”

“We can't go back to the way things were. We can't just morph again and fix the world.”

“I take back fifty percent of the unkind things I have said about you.”

“Zordon chose us all those years ago.”

“Power-hungry madman.”

“The things we did to each other...”

Industry (2020) 1x01 + Spooks 5x10 + The Twilight Zone 2x06 Reviewed

Industry (2020) 1x01

A BBC2 banking drama. People have to keep their jobs and there is incoherent banking talk. Someone sleeps in a toilet and uses makeup to hide dark circles. Some needs fake college transcripts, there is twerking in front of a laptop and indignity. There is sex, nudity and charmless people. Someone dies and this was stunningly horrendous.

Best Lines:

“You look like regional nightclub security.”

“Client will not hear no.”

“The Undertaker! Attiude era!”

~
Aftermath

Eco warriors seize the Thames flood barrier and threaten to flood the city. Adam has a son? Adam bores. Eco warriors have mid century thuggery. This show had so many sinister cabals with pernicious ends. People do rueful reflection and determine each other's trustworthiness. Adam and his 'heroic fortitude' repudiates pity. It is a time of national crisis, again.

There are threats via computer disc and this tries to make consequences of inconsequentiality. Recall Tom? The one who couldn't act? There is more bad acting to fill his void. This was incredible nonsence. There are deranged minds in this ephemera which was mediocrity. There is no dramatic pathos. There was innate wickedness and oppressive secrecy. There was no atmosphere of drama. This was fatuous ignominy. The eco warriors want a document called Aftermath published.

This was not that interesting. There is polite hostility in this interminable ep. There are adverse decisions. Things are connived at. There is preening caddishness and unscrupulous types. There is flooding and Adam emoting. I do not care. There is an ideological crossfire. Adam is a staunch defender. There is a wall of crazy and Aftermath exists and shows plans for what is to come. Adam's nuts.

Best Lines:

“The barrier never closes.”

“We have nothing to offer these people.”

“Hell of a memorial.”

“Climate's revenge on mankind's insanity.”

“Chaos to come.”

“City evacuation plan.”

“Probably not the Dutch!”

“Use the vents to get at them.”

“Witnessing their own success.”

People in an undersea lab make a world changing discovery. There is a bizarre translation device. The new life is hostile and plans to put an end to the human species. This was okay.

Best Line:

“I hate it down here, what we're doing.”
