To Light The Way To Bed

Book Review: Wolf Hall

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
The award winning epic that continues in the excellent ‘Bring Up The Bodies’. Henry VIII rules an opulent brutal court. Thomas Cromwell is a lowborn man with a mysterious past but through his intelligence and vindictive nature he rises and rises from being a protégée of Cardinal Wolsey to being the premier adviser to Henry VIII.

Cromwell has a family he cares for, becomes an ally to the minxy Anne Boleyn and has an overblown conflict with the monument to malevolence Thomas More. This was enthralling, good and an elegant study of the pathologically egocentric Cromwell and his mastery of the arrogant idiots at the Tudor court.

Best Lines:
“My lord when you shout, the beggars on the street can hear you. In Calais.”

“Hans wants to paint me.”
“I hope he can run fast,”

“If a man spoke to you in that tone, you’d invite him to step outside and ask someone to hold your coat.”

“All that rabbit fur she is bundled up in...It looks as if it has been nibbled.”
“She’s Henry’s daughter for sure.”

“He has told Norris what she offers him and it doesn’t conduce to getting a child, I can tell you.”

“Seven years she schemed to be queen, and God protect us from answered prayers.”

The Musketeers 1x03 + Banshee 1x10 Reviewed

Commodities
The musketeers have to deal with the explorer Emilie (James Callis of ‘Battlestar Galactica’) and his wife who are putrid stains on humanity. Meanwhile flashbacks reveal the background to Athos, Milady and their pallid miens. She is a heinous skank with bottomless self-absorption, he bores. Porthos’ mixed race background plays into the plot as Emilie is infested by a certain ideological mentality. This show is slightly-twee.

The musketeers have an interesting concept of first aid, France’s trade treaty with Spain plays an important plot part, Athos has difficulty engaging with society, Porthos abhors Emilie and flies into a murderous rage around him. This was dull and Constance is menaced by Milady.

Best Lines:
“Any notion of a personal life ended the day I picked you out of the gutter and made you my creature.”

“Hurry and you might live.”

“My father raised me on tales of the great heroism of the musketeers.”
“Who was he, Nostradamus? The regiment didn’t even exist then.”

“That was very formal.”

“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that.”

“The cost would be unfathomable.”

“That’s very wicked of him.”

“What do you think he’s going to do to me when he finds out that I don’t have a gift for him?”
“Quite ugly things I’d imagine.”

“I refuse to arrive at the palace on an ass.”

A Mixture of Madness
Mr Rabbit whines, Hood is in peril, Kai kills people, the Native American casino plot drags on, blood and bullets fly. This was dull with death, Carries losing her fake life and Hood facing exposure as the real Lucas Hood’s grave is found.

Best Lines:
“This is my home!”
“So you’re upset that the man who cut off the head of the guy you sent to kill him isn’t respecting your privacy?”

“I don’t like you very much.”
“Duly noted.”

“Did we win?”
“We didn’t lose.”

“I never forgave you.”

“Goodbye daddy.”

Movie Review: Banshee Chapter

Banshee Chapter (2014)
In this excellent horror Anne a journalist will do anything to uncover what or who caused her friend James (it’s the guy who played Steve Newlin on ‘True Blood’) disappearance. But to her horror, she discovers that it wants to find her too. James was researching MK-Ultra mind control experiments and took a dangerous drug that was used in the experiments. Thus setting in motion creepy, disturbing and unsettling events. Anne uncovers a story of number stations, a crazy 1970s icon, HP Lovecraft and a meancer of society from outside the scope of accepted reality. Anne is in active risk and largely void of recognisable emotion. This was a deeply scary tale of repellent experiments carried out with weird callousness and a total lack of concern and how the experiments have a terrible legacy. This is more horrifying then Miley Cyrus Unplugged and has a cruel twist ending.

Best Lines:
“These entities were kind of malignant and threatening. And actually a handful of the volunteers had traumatic and terrible encounters with these entities.”

“I don’t want to see myself doing some weird drug on youtube.”

“It’s coming toward the house.”

“His books were written in a haze of pills, booze and to some schizophrenic genius.”

“He tied the reporter to a chair and threw him into the pool.”

“Who did your interior decorating? Charles Manson?”

“It’s bad etiquette.”

“It lets them in.”

“I want to find out who’s behind this.”
“Well you’re in luck because I think it wants to find us too.”

“It turns your brain into a receiver so they could come through.”

“Thomas put the drugs down.”

“They’re coming for us.”
