Movie Review: Fast Five (2011)

I’ve seen the first one and now this. These films are stupid. Men in muscle t-shirts growl at each other in Rio. Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) is the leader of the elite service of the DSS and is chasing down Dom and co Old Testament style. Dom (Vin Diesel, who still can’t act) and co are morally tarnished figures who revel in their self-righteousness. There are fight scenes. Dom isn’t an oppositional hero he is a thug. Brian (the late Paul Walker) is a bland pretty boy. The villain (Joaquim De Almeda) is a one note baddie. Dom and co carry out a ridiculous heist as they drive really fast around Rio. This was dumb, loud and dim. The end credits contain a PSA about not copying any of the car play depicted in this movie which is ironic considering Walker’s fate.

Sherlock 3x03 Reviewed

His Last Vow
Charles Augustus Magnussen is a foreign newspaper magnate and blackmailer. He knows everyone’s pressure points and likes to torment and degrade people. Meanwhile John breaks out of domesticity to beat up a smackhead and drag various people including Sherlock out of a drugs den. The smackhead he beat up is Bill Wiggins (he of the Baker Street Irregulars) and Sherlock befriends Wiggins.

Anderson, Molly and Mycroft all annoy. Sherlock has a ‘girlfriend’ and it is Janine the bridesmaid but he has ulterior motives. Sherlock wants to get into Magnussen’s lair, the who and what of Redbeard is revealed and Mary’s lies are exposed to the harsh light of day. Sherlock hallucinates, nearly dies but lives for John. Janine heads off to a cottage on the Sussex Downs that has beehives.

Mrs Holmes doesn’t want her sons smoking, John gets his balls busted and is dubbed Sherlock’s damsel in distress. Well he is Sherlock’s pressure point. Everyone is a psychopath and there are twists and revelations. Sherlock does something, people are damaged and this was goodish. This was not bleak and nihilistic but a tale of a strange and unique marriage that is not quietly devastating. But the ‘big reveal’ at the end was a bit much.

Best Lines:
“You have my sincere apologies for being foreign.”

“Please don’t do that.”

“Will you please move your hand?”

“This is ownership.”

“He’s the drugs one, yeah?”

“Arse-end of the universe with the scum of the earth.”

“We’re not playing this game.”

“Owns some newspapers, ones I don’t read.”

“I know how to sprain people.”

“It’s good to be missed.”

“Just look frightened and scuttle.”

“Wine and sitting.”

“She’s bad, that one.”

“Mr and Mrs Psychopath.”

“I’m in news, you moron.”

“Can’t wait to see you arrested.”

“Oh Christ Sherlock.”

“Is everyone I’ve met a psychopath?”

“What have I ever done, um, my whole life, to deserve you?”

“You were a doctor who went to war. You’re a man who couldn’t stay in the suburbs for more than a month without storming a crack den, beating up a junkie. Your best friend is a sociopath who solves crimes as an alternative to getting high.”
