Heroes Season 4 Ep 9 Review

Brother’s Keeper

Samuel killed Mohinder then Hiro travels back in time eight weeks and changes Mohinder’s fate by dumping him in a loony bin. His brain melting problems and Ando are both forgotten. Tracy loses control of her powers, bonds a bit with Claire and decides to join the evil carnies.

Claire has ditched college to hang out with her creepy father. Peter and fake Nathan find the real Nathan’s body. Angela has been keeping her dead son in a freezer in a storage locker, nice. They look up Matt who tells them what he did. They take the truth way too calmly. Matt escapes the hospital and Sylar seems to be back in his own body.

Mohinder learns that Samuel was born at Coyote Sands and that ‘specials’ as he calls them give off an aura. Samuel uses these auras to increase his power. Oh and Mohinder built the compass as if anyone cares.

This was dull. Samuel is just evil apparently. Hiro is a jerk and Peter has no reaction to learning his brother is dead and that Sylar is walking around wearing Nathan’s face. He had a far stronger reaction in ‘Five Years Gone’. This show is just rubbish now; Nathan’s whole turn to the dark side in season 3 has been forgotten. Tracy freezing Claire and breaking off her foot was ridiculous. Nobody has any discernable personality traits.

Six Degrees Ep 13 Review

A Simple Twist of Fate

I missed eps 11 and 12 but I really don’t care. Laura and Steven have hooked up. Mae continues to bore and have issues with her mother. Ray is being investigated. Everything revolves around Ray now. Whitney is selfish as she decides she wants Steven. Carlos hooks up with Mae again.

Laura’s a moron, Damon has nothing interesting to do, Mae’s dumb and Whitney is selfish and makes it all about her. Nothing has changed since episode 1.

Best Lines:
“My moped got towed.”
“How do you tow a moped?”

Supernatural Season 5 Ep 5 Review

Fallen Idols

In a town with a wax museum, people are being killed by James Dean’s car and an angry Abraham Lincoln. Sam has to fight Ghandi and Dean is beaten up by Paris Hilton. It seems a hungry pagan god is on the loose and only an axe can save the day. This was okay with some funny moments with Paris Hilton. But of course Sam has to bring things down by being a whining jerk, playing the victim and still not apologising.

Book Review: The Lace Reader

The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry

This is an excellent gothic novel. Towner Whitney returns to her home town of Salem because of a family crisis. Once there she learns that the events of the past are influencing the present. Towner must find a way to overcome adversity, deal with the troubles of her past and get along with friends and family.

This is a gripping account of a troubled woman’s attempts to save herself and face the past without flinching.

‘Kick Ass’ trailer 2.0
Words fail me, they really do. The newspapers have condemned this already. Hee.

CSI Season 9 Ep 20 Review

A Space Oddity

Astro Quest is a beloved 1960’s TV show that bears a startling resemblance to ‘Star Trek’. It starred a heroic firm jawed captain (Joshua Coxx of ‘Babylon 5’) and has an army of devoted fans. Then a noxious man named Danson makes a dark and edgy remake: Astro Quest Redux. The fans reject it and someone kills Danson. But whodunit?

This ep centres on two minor characters, Hodges and Wendy (Liz Vassey of ‘Maximum Bob’), as they help to solve the case and have buckets of UST. This was very good with hilarious imaginary scenes and the killer being revealed as Danson’s partner (Kate Vernon of ‘Battlestar Galactica’) who reacted badly to him stealing her ideas.

Best Lines:
The mythology began to eat away at my soul.”

“You suck!”

“I’m making a documentary on the gestalt constructs of sci-fi mytho culture.”

“He was killed by one of the signifiers he sought to subvert.”

Movie Reviews: The Crazies + Jennifer's Body

The Crazies (2010)

A remake of the freaky 1970’s original. This is downbeat and creepy, plus unlike the turgid ‘The Wolfman’ this has actual scares. Our hero (played by one of the killers from ‘Scream 2’) tries to save himself, his wife and his sidekick from death after a biological weapon gets into the town’s water supply. It makes people murderously insane and there is no cure.

On a distasteful note the hero’s wife keeps getting menaced, needs constant rescuing and is told to shut up. Still the film has a nice downer ending and some genuine scares. This was okay.

Jennifer’s Body (2009)

Jennifer (Megan Fox) and Needy (Amanda Seyfried of ‘Veronica Mars’ and ‘Mean Girls’) are best friends in the small town of Devil’s Kettle. But something foul is afoot when Low Shoulder, a third rate emo band come to town. The lead singer Nikolai (Adam Brody of ‘The O.C.’ and ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’) is so desperate for success that he and his bandmates sacrifice Jennifer in a dark ritual they found online so they’ll be famous.

Things don’t go according to plan and Jennifer shows up at Needy’s house blood soaked, howling and projectile vomiting. She’s possessed by a demon and needs to eat human flesh to stay beautiful. She chows down on a football player and a goth.

Needy has to decide what to do about her best friend turned frenemy. Meanwhile Low Shoulder with their manscara and bad lip syncing become huge stars. But a day of reckoning is coming. This was very good with wonderfully waspish dialogue and some great laughs. This film and unfairly under-rated and over-looked.

Best Lines:
Quit tampooning yourself and get down here.”

“This is a dark, dark day for Devil’s Kettle.”

“I’m still a little depressed about, you know, the smouldering funeral pyre in the middle of town.”

“Jennifer’s evil.”
“I know.”

“Our library has an occult section?”

“Did you hear what Colin Gray looked like when they found him?”
“Lasagne with teeth?”
“You heard.”
