Heroes Season 4 Ep 6 Review

Strange Attractors

The past’s blood stains the present. Noah is a waste of blood and organs. Tracy tries to help Jeremy. Matt’s tormented by Sylar. Samuel stands around being ominous. It seems he gets his power from his evil carnies. Noah’s actions towards those with abilities have always been flavoured with distain and now he gets Jeremy killed. Claire and Gretchen deal with fellow mean girl pledges Paris and Nicole. Then Claire unmasks Rebecca as she goes all ‘SAW’ on Gretchen. Sylar takes over Matt because Matt is dumb.

This was interminable. No viewer should be made to suffer so; I have no reason further to conceal my despair. Why did TPTB never follow up on: the Nikki/Tracy/triplets storyline? Peter’s resistance? The underground? Matt’s FBI friend? Monica?

Six Degrees Ep 10 Review

Ray’s Back

An annoying jerk named Ray (Josh Charles of ‘SWAT’ and ‘The Good Wife’) returns to town. He knows everyone. Mae continues to have no plot, Carlos looks for a new job, Damian gets a new job, Whitney’s selfish and Stephen is arrested for “attempting to start a riot.” This is dull, nobody cares about these people.

Best Line:
I’m moving into accounting, I can’t even do short division.”

Flashforward Ep 7 review

The Gift

I know ‘Stargate Universe’ was renewed but will this be? Mark has a look on his face like he’s taking a permanent power dump. People who didn’t have flashforwards set up the AlreadyGhosts website and do self destructive stuff. Alex Kingston guest stars again.

Demetri’s motivation is all over the place. Nicole volunteers at the only hospital in town. Olivia never asked why Bryce wanted to kill himself. Some friend she is. So he befriends Nicole. Dylan is still in hospital being a bed blocker.

Lloyd and Olivia chat. Mark, Demetri and Al hang out a boring death club. Aaron is told how Tracy died. Callum Keith Rennie of ‘Harper’s Island’ and ‘Due South’ guest stars as a lost aggressive nihilist.

It turns out Al’s flashforward showed he caused the death of a woman named Celia so to change the future he kills himself. Then Aaron arrives home to find Tracy waiting for him.

This was uninvolving. It has some good ideas but is badly paced, clichéd, populated by idiot characters and badly acted. Who are Jericho? Why did they try to kill Tracy? Why is nobody looking for Suspect Zero?

Best Lines:
Am I the only one who finds that disturbing?”
“No, you’re not.”

Fringe Season 2 Ep 14 Review

The Bishop Revival

TPTB are really dragging out the Peter reveal. He stole Peter from the other universe no doubt triggering the war and the blight. He has some hard explaining to do. Plus where is Peter’s real father? Anyway a wedding descends into death. Walter drives and revealed he got married in a purple tuxedo. He also hopes Peter and Olivia will get married, somehow I doubt that will happen with the whole Peter is living in the wrong universe thing hanging over them.

Someone is targeting groups of people for death with a virus designed by Robert Bishop, Walter’s father. Peter reveals he sold Robert’s books ten years ago as he was angry at Walter. A pretentious wannabe made them into ‘art’ that has to be seen to be believed. Walter says: “Family is very important to me.”

The villain of the week is tracked down and there is a creepy revelation about who he was. This was good.

How did Peter sniff out the one non jasmine scented candle? Nobody seems to wonder why the toxin made to kill Walter doesn’t affect Peter. How did the villain not age? How much longer can the Peter secret be kept?

Supernatural Season 5 Ep 2 Review

Good God, Y’All

Bobby sulks and needs to shut up. Sam and Dean have sigils on their ribs and are hidden from the angels. Castiel shows up to reveal that Dean’s amulet can locate God. I keep thinking of Misha Collins guest role on ‘Nip/Tuck’. Anyway after that load of exposition the plot gets going.

Sam and Dean arrive at a town in trouble to the tune of ‘Spirit in the Sky’ and run into the old harpy Ellen. It seems the Book of Revelations is coming to pass in the town. But Sam is too busy being a snot and pulling a pity party to care.

One of the Four Horseman, War, is running around town causing problems. The day is saved, sort of. Sam then dramatically declares he is leaving on his own. He had his exit all set up and planned and this is undercut when Dean doesn’t object to him heading off. Drama queen. This was very good.

Book Review: By Blood We Live

By Blood We Live edited by John Joseph Adams

This is a good and haunting anthology of vampire stories. It contains such stories as:

Snow, Glass, Apples
This is an ice cold and deeply disturbing version of ‘Snow White’.

The Master of Rampling Gate
This is a rather creepy tale which descends into being confusing and over written.

Under St. Peters
A very dark story about a vampire who is kept under St Peter’s Basilica.

Child of an Ancient City
A merchant tells of how he and his companions encountered a strange creature in a forest and how they escaped it.

Endless Night
One of the earliest polar explorations is going wrong. One of the team has his own reasons for being there and he shouldn’t be there at all.

This puts an interesting twist on the story of a motley group of vampire hunters. The identity of one hunter and the origins of the vampires are well done.

Life is the Teacher
A newly made vampire learns to hunt.

The Vechi Barbat
A woman in an asylum tells of what happened in her remote superstitious village.

A short tale of a vampire and the Roanoke colony.

Foxtrot at High Noon
In a post-apoc world, a man comes to a town plagued by a gang.

This is Now
This like ‘Stand by Me’ with vampires.

Blood Gothic
A woman wants a vampire lover so badly that her unfulfilled desire drives her mad.

Mama Gone
A dead woman scratches at the windows wanting in to her old home.

Abraham’s Boys
Van Helsing is viewed from a different perspective by his sons. He is not a hero to them but a terrifying presence.

Nunc Dimitis
A vampire’s servant seeks out his replacement.

A vampire pines for the man she does not have.

After The Stone Age
Vampirism is the new must have cosmetic surgery alternative.

A Stand Up Dame
A noir gumshoe meets a vampire.

Sunrise on Running Water
A vampire boards the Titanic.

A man is told by an angel to kill a vampire.

Undead Again
This tale of vampires in the future is nicely unsettling.

Peking Man
A tale of Stone Age vampires.

A vampire on the Italian Rivera.

A tale of vampire love.

Lucy, in her splendour
A couple deal with an unwanted vampire guest.

The Wide, Carnivorous Sky
A group of war veterans deal with a vampire.

One for the Road
A car breaks down by a vampire infested town.
