Six Degrees Ep 8 Review

Get A Room

Whitney’s selfish and rude and gets a new boyfriend in Todd. Carlos’ old pal Lucas shows up. Carlos is Anya’s roommate? Damian’s legal problems seem over. Carlos looks for a new apartment and views one where the bathtub doubles as the kitchen table. Eew, unsanitary!

Mae is an idiot and Carlos strays. Anya lies and cheats on Steven with Lucas. Laura makes a friend. This was dull.

Heroes Season 4 Ep 1 Review

Orientation/Jump, Push, Fall

New characters in the form of possibly evil carnies show up, no stereotyping going on there then. The head carnie Samuel (Robert Knepper of ‘Prison Break’) talks in endless speeches. He has minions in the form of Edgar (Ray Park of ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ and ‘X-Men’) and Lydia who has future predicting tattoos. None of their powers make any sense.

Claire goes to college, Peter is an EMT and Matt’s a detective. Aren’t they all on government watch lists or something? Was all of last season forgotten? How did Claire get into college? She has to deal with a snotty roommate named Annie and makes a new friend in Gretchen.

Meanwhile Ando and Hiro are still stupid. Why Ando is still friends with Hiro isn’t explained. Hiro is his same selfish and rude self and now he’s dying. Boo hoo. Angela and Noah are still amoral morons having the same conversations over and over again. Sylar is Nathan and he’s also in Matt’s head making him go buggy. Where are Nathan’s wife and kids? Sylar as Nathan pulls ominous faces.

Danko dies and he had a key in his stomach for some reason. Tracy’s moral light switch gets another flipping. Noah’s outraged that the ex-wife he abused has moved on. Peter and Edgar have an unimpressive fight scene. It’s Jess from ‘Gilmore Girls’ vs Darth Maul and we’re expected to believe Jess wins. These were uninteresting; this show’s spark is long gone.

Will nothing make TPTB write Noah, Hiro and Sylar off this show? Matt is going mental. Who are Samuel and his buddies? Who killed Annie?

Best Lines:
“You heard about that?”
“A cheerleader in Texas gets her head sawed off at the Homecoming game?”

Book Review: Shutter Island

Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

Teddy Daniels has come to Shutter Island to find escaped murderer Rachel Solando. Shutter Island houses a hospital for the criminally insane. There the doctors hope to help the violent and deranged, or do they?

Teddy soon suspects that something nefarious is going on. Is the staff lying to him? Why are the patients so fearful? How did Rachel Solando escape from a locked room? Is there anyone he can trust? Will he be allowed to leave?

This is a very good suspense novel. I guessed the twist early on but it was a wonderful read getting to the end.

Best Line:
If you’re not crazy but people have told the world you are, then all your protests to the contrary underscore their point.”

Flashforward Ep 3 Review

137 Sekunden

Demetri is told he’ll be shot three times in the chest. Mark lies and will not blink. An imprisoned Nazi named Geyer claims to have information on the blackout. He’ll tell Mark the information for his freedom. Mark agrees to this for some reason. Janis Hawk is rude.

The FBI boss’ wife had a vision of a foster son and she’s a bit wary when she sees the boy in the present. The boy has a mother so how come he’ll end up calling her mommy in a few months?

Aaron has Tracy exhumed. Demetri mopes. People make speeches. Dead crows are important. People are dumb and stupid. Aaron’s ex-wife Kate is a harpy. The final scenes suggest that the blackout was not a natural occurrence and that it has happened before. But will it happen again? This was okay, this show is watchable but it’s not attention grabbing like ‘Lost’.

Where has Nicole the babysitter gone? What is up with Aaron’s vision of Tracy? What is the pylon all about? What does Zoe’s flashforward mean?

Best Line:
“We haven’t stopped to ask ourselves, what if it happened before?”

Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes (2009)

This was a good reimagining of Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters. Holmes the dogged detective and his put upon best friend/sidekick Watson investigate macabre goings on in Victorian London.

Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) is evil and he does black magic in cellars. Until he is caught and executed. But he gets better and embarks on a new crime spree. So Holmes and Watson must stop him.

As the intrepid duo run around it becomes clear that there is a lot more going on readily apparent. The ending sets up a sequel nicely, let us hope they make it. This was wonderful fun with subtext galore especially when Holmes sees Watson his best and indeed only friend blown up.

There are some flaws: Watson (Jude Law) is a bit too smug, his fiancée Mary is a harpy, Irene Adler takes up too much screen time, the rooms at Baker Street seem overly large, Lestrade didn’t seem right and how did Irene Adler get from parliament to London Bridge?

But throughout we get the wonderful enjoyable Holmes/Watson friendship as Watson continues to put up with the smug bipolar Holmes who never seems to comb his hair. I enjoyed the recreation of Victorian London especially Piccadilly Circus and London Bridge.

The London of Holmes & Watson looks like an exciting place to live. I hope we see more of it. I liked this.
