Book Review: Synthesis

Star Trek Titan: Synthesis by James Swallow

The 5th ‘Titan’ novel continues the pattern set by the 4th novel in that it is an awful mish mash of technobabble and liberal moralising.

The Titan encounters a civilisation of smug sentient computers. These Artificial Intelligences are fighting The Null, a destructive force from some Lovecraft dimension.

One of the AI’s bonds with the crew in-between self righteous speeches on machine life. The Titan crew put up with this for some inane reason despite the interfering AI causing Titan to become self aware.

Enough already. This book has way too much technobabble, too much inane character interaction, too much smugness, ugly cover art and bizarre plotting. For example the ship’s doctor has been officially forgiven his multiple assaults on and kidnapping of Troi, patronising her, violating the Prime Directive by running madly around on a pre-warp world and general jerkass behaviour. All this is forgiven cos hey, that’s how he rolls.

I’ve lost almost all interest in reading any future ‘Titan’ novels after books 4 and 5. Well done sirs, well done.

Fringe Season 2 Ep 6 Review

Earthling

People disintegrate into ash. The team investigate. It ties into a past case of Broyles’ and a comatose Russian cosmonaut who brought something back from space with him. This was dull with some horrendous acting. Plus was it aliens? I thought this show wasn’t going to do aliens? Still we get to see Broyles shoot a coma patient in the head and Olivia’s sister and niece have vanished, hopefully never to be seen again.

Best Lines:
“You’d draw genitalia on the reindeer decorations.”
“Happy memories Walter.”

“Russian fringe science. There’s a pleasant thought.”

“When the CIA says cease and desist. We kind of mean it.”

Trailer Fun

‘I Don’t Believe You’ song by Pink
This ballad is dull and makes ‘About A Girl’ grow on me.

~
White Collar’ trailer
Matthew Bomer of ‘Chuck’ and ‘Traveler’ is hot but this looks insufferably smug. There is a reason I don’t watch ‘Lie to Me’ or ‘The Mentalist’ and that has to do with the over abundance of smug. This show similarly reeks of smug.

~
‘Buried Alive’ trailer
I like this horror b-movie but the trailer doesn’t do it justice and it leaves out Tobin Bell’s best line: “Lester ain’t got no cable.”

~
‘Sanctuary’ season 2 clip
I haven’t got to see season 1 yet and I see they’ve killed off a main character in idiot fashion. Plus what accent is Amanda Tapping trying to do?!?

~
‘V’ Ep 2 promo
Now that looks so much better than the weak pilot ep. Plus bad things have to happen to Chad; I remember the idiot custody case Scott Wolf’s character put the viewer through on ‘Party of Five’

~
Stargate Universe’ Ep 7 promo
Looks interesting but why doesn’t somebody shut Telford up already?

~
Salt’ trailer
This has to be better than ‘Wanted’. I’ll see it.

~
‘Trinity’ season 1 ad
Posh oiks, poor oiks, rampant promiscuity, horrible murders, a shotgun, Charles Dance and weird goings on in college sub basements. This looks funny and creepy. I’ll watch it; nothing could be as bad as ‘Demons’.

~
Paranormal Activity’ trailer
This looks creepy. I’ll be there.
