The Best Horror Of The Year Volume Twelve edited by Ellen Datlow, part 5
My Name Is Ellie
A tale of a creepy family, who live in a creepy house. This was good and creepy.
A family home conceals the foulest thing. This was good.
“You used to be fun once upon a time.”
“You used to be kind,”
“Always known to expect the worst of one another.”
“I have no place.”
“Couldn't pay for help or the kind of school that would take us out of his sight.”
How To Stay Afloat When Drowning
Sad pathetic people and I've no idea what this was about.
This Was Always Going To Happen
I've no idea what this was about.
The Butcher's Table
A dark tale of pirates, creepy cultists with the lowest aspirations and satanists and death and monsters and a trip to hell. There is world building of hell like hellward candles. One feels a strong disgust reponse for the characters in this. People suffer without knowing why. This was a dauntingly complex tale of a voyage to the shores of hell. This has deranged engry and irreparable harm is done. Terrible mistakes are made and terrible people make good reading. This was okay.
“Don't take on no high-borne airs with me, you fancy bastard.”
“I don't know what you mean by showing that to me, but I assure you I have no use for it.”
“Pack of diabolists,”
“Thug who should be lapping water from a puddle in Newgate prison-”
“Would remember this wretch, however, and he would see him suffer for this display.”
“Break the world to keep her.”
“Something like thought seemed to pass across Mr. Gully's face.”
“What he had done to further satan's cause in society.”
“Telling dull stories to each other because no one else would bother to listen.”
“He's made his own fate.”
“This time no one laughed.”
“Existed in a place unreachable to them now.”
“Playing at worship.”
“Enforcers of the infernal order.”
“I look forward to seeing the end of him.”
“Performance of ignorance.”
“Ache of unanswered yearning.”
“Slivers of themselves they would never recover not even miss.”
“Darker fates in store for those caught here.”
“Voice would be silenced for generations.”
“The worst people he had ever known had gathered for their terrible feast.”
