Book Review: The Witches aka The Devil's Own

The Witches aka The Devil’s Own by Peter Curtis
This novel was originally published in 1960 and Peter Curtis is the pen-name for the late Norah Lofts. This is a tale of an unhappy woman, Miss Mayfield, given a job in a lonely and isolated villain. She soon realises via economical menace that the villagers are up to labyrinthine schemes and they are universally hostile to those who interfere. Miss Mayfield faces noble condescension and portents of doom as she tries to undermine the evil plans of the local coven. This was good and was made into a Joan Fontaine movie.

Best Line:
“A street clinging desperately to some remnant of respectability.”
