Book Review: Bonfire

Bonfire by Krysten Ritter
The actress who has been in ‘Veronica Mars’, ‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Don’t Trust The Bitch In Apartment 23’ and ‘Jessica Jones’ has given us this excellent debut novel. This is a tale of small town corruption, memory, bullying, conspiracy and a broken woman who has to tie it all together.

The heroine returns to the small town, Barrens, she left 10 years ago where she was vociferously bullied by mean girls. She’s there to investigate accusations that the local industry has created toxic pollution. As she investigates she uncovers deceit and serious implications and negative group dynamics.

The homecoming is emotionally traumatising for her as she suffers significant anxiety. She uncovers dark, suffocating secrets long hidden. But some things remain unexplained. Our heroine is argumentative and she can’t make effective decisions. This was excellent and I enjoyed it.

Best Lines:
“It’s amazing how poorly the golden girls of Barrens High have fared.”

“The terrible suspicion that something was very wrong in the woods that night.”
