1998 tape

Got rid of a videotape from 1998. It had four tv show eps on it. One ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, one ‘Earth: Final Conflict’, one ‘The X Files’ and one ‘Profiler’.

The ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ ep was the season 2 opener ‘When She Was Bad’ when Buffy returns to Sunnydale in a vile mood. Everyone is shocked, shocked at Buffy being cold, distant and rude and help her get back to normal. Poor saps, little did they know that soon enough cold, distant and rude would be Buffy’s standard operating procedure. It’s just dawned on me that the Buffy theme is awful. It’s noise not music. Buffy’s dad Hank shows up and where did he disappear to after this? Jenny the lying liar who lies shows up and lies. Buffy works out. The Master’s lackeys try to raise him from the dead and fail. You know on season 1 ‘Angel’ Wolfram & Hart raised Darla from the dead with far less bother. After having had enough of Buffy, Xander threatens her. And now in season 8 he’s her loyal little lapdog again. Sigh. This was dull.

Best Lines:
At least when she was burning stuff down, I knew what to say.”

“The ground is consecrated, it burns!”

“She’s possessed.”
“Possessed by what?”
“A possessing thing.”

The ‘Earth: Final Conflict’ was the season 1 ep ‘Wrath of Achilles’ in which Augur and Doors have Lili upload a virus into the Taleon’s computer systems. Lili is extremely smug about her actions. Naturally it all goes haywire. Boone and Sandoval are trapped in a building. Lili and Dan’an’s shuttle crashes in the woods and Doors sends mercenaries to question the granny pants wearing Da’an. Somehow Da’an fails to notice the large blue blinking light on Lili’s lighter/locator. The picture quality and SFX are equally awful. The huge Taelon mothership has to save the day. At the end Da’an and Lili bond over what looks like, well you know what it looks like. This was dull.

Best Line: “All I can think is thank God they came in peace.”

The X Files’ ep was ‘The Post Modern Prometheus’ which was a black and white gimmick ep with a soundtrack of Cher songs and a guest turn from Jerry Springer. A monster runs around a small town drugging and impregnating women. But apparently that is acceptable behaviour as he’s lonely. How did the writers not see the ick factor of this plot? There’s bad sound quality, a mad scientist, a thunderstorm, overacting, general stupidity and lots of offensiveness.

Best Line: “I got your name off the tv. Some lady on the Jerry Springer show who had a werewolf baby said you came to her house.”

To follow up the ickness of the previous ep comes this season 2 ‘Profiler’ ep ‘Every Five Minutes’ which sees the VCTF hunt down a sex offender. Alicia Coppola of ‘Jericho’ guest stars. This ep is all but unwatachable; the subject matter was just unpleasant. Anyway the criminal is caught and Samantha arrests Jack’s Jill.
