Book Review: The Romanovs

The Romanovs by Simon Sebag Montefiore
From the author of ‘Jerusalem’ comes this tale of the decadent, yet relentlessly conservative and doomed clan who ruled Russian from 1613 to 1918. This ‘epic’ leaves one desperately bored. It is badly written and goes off on tangents. Somehow it is all boring. This was lamentable and not even blandly competent.

Best Lines:
“Alcoholic and sadistic clod.”

“I will treat you as a malefactor.”

“Regicidal strangling.”

“I have grown accustomed to him.”

“God knows where my wife gets her pregnancies.”

“My orders would not be carried out unless they were the sort of orders that could be carried out.”

“No cultural interests.”

“Always upsetting chairs.”

“His stupidity was so notorious.”
