The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams
This heroic fantasy starts out promisingly. It is a tale of a fallen empire, bug people, fire witches, war-beasts, giant bats, an adventuress and different vampires. But this doesn’t even manage to be reasonably engrossing or affably bleak or even gloriously silly. This simplistic narrative is full of downright odious people. This is all origin myths, past certainties and dreadful menace that one neither has the time or inclination to care about.
Best Lines:
“An insult bordering on a threat.”
“We do not make agreements with food.”
“It was not a memory Tor looked back on with any fondness.”
