Movie Reviews: The East + This Is 40 + 6 others

The East (2012)
In this oblique drama, a woman tries to infiltrate an eco-terrorist cell with a nefarious reputation full of counterculture leanings. This starts out rooted and real but goes downhill. She assumes the name Sarah and dyes her hair as a disguise but it never wears off. Ellen Page and Alexander Skarsgard from ‘True Blood’ who looks like Charles Manson lead the East.

Sarah has a dull life of habit and duty but is drawn into their world of disgruntlement. This was not a captivating narrative and has no sense of place or dynamism. This was not an unbridled success not was it achingly poignantly human. There is sign language, calculated outrage and poisonous sentiments. The East have cold triumph and satisfaction and are morally flexible.

The East have no raw panache just bone chilling chortling. They are a gibbering mob of voracious smirking maws of tiny eyed loons into dramatic whimsy. This was a bit leaden. Sarah is friendless and tightly wound and is drawn into their shameless attention seeking stunts. This keeps accomplishment at bay. There are reveals, bored rich kids boiling with rage at the most inconsequential slights and increased hostility. Sarah has a shallow boyfriend who slinks off, the anarchist collective draws her in and there is a twist.

“We will not show mercy.”

“Old apples go to the dump.”

“It’s actually his property the group thinks they’re squatting on.”

“That’s how 400 and 50 friends think they’re in touch with you when no one has actually seen you for years.”

This Is 40 (2012)
The sequel of sorts to ‘Knocked Up’. The husband whines and his shrew wife nags. There is sexism and dated George Clooney references. The husband has contempt for his family and thinks everything they do or think has no value. He also has ruined the family’s finances. There are unfortunate David Bowie and Prince references. Also men think that they are owed sex. Also children are horrible and old people are dreadful. This was bad and sexist.

Best Lines:
“You can’t handle ‘Lost’. It’s too violent and you won’t understand.”

“Line up for murder.”

“Snitches wind up in ditches.”

“I’m glad your husband died.”

“I don’t want to shop at old lady stores.”

“I’ve nerve damage from my c-section.”

“He’s doing sad lonely eyes.”

“Who takes a half hour to go to the bathroom?”
“John Goodman!”

“They don’t know what downloading means.”

“That gout foot.”

“Nobody plays with sticks!”

“Everything that comes out of her mouth is a lie. Everything that goes into it is a dick.”

“You’re not allowed to judge me.”
